It’s been a long time, so many University stuff was in my way, but now I can finally write. Right after I finished the post on my “movies to watch” list… I pressed play on one of them.
“The Fundamentals of Caring“
Director: Rob Burnett;
Screenplay: Rob Burnett;
Based on a novel by Jonathan Evison;
Starring: Paul Rudd, Craig Roberts, Selena Gomez and others.
Ben is a writer, an ex-father and an ex-husband. He is lost, but finds his way back through a care-giving class. Trevor is a teenager who suffers from a disease. He needs a care taker – Ben. As both got “closer”, they go on a road trip where they meet a girl named Dot.
I’m already going to get to the relationship between Trevor and Ben. They have such an amazing dynamic. While you watch those two hit it off, maybe not in the best way, but their way is definitely the funniest, you forget about Trevor’s disability and it gives a bright color to the whole story. I have not read Jonathan Evision’s book “The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving”, but I am sure, that Paul Rudd is the perfect man for the part (as well as Craig Roberts).
Of Course because of his situation Craig’s character Trevor has to have a disposition. At first you think “What a jerk, this kid is!?“, but then you got to know him and you feel sad for him. But this movie isn’t about feeling sad about anyone. Neither is the book. That’s why the book is a tragicomedy. That’s why the movie is comedy/drama. Laughter is the best way to get through… basically anything. And that is what makes this movie so good. But how can we leave out the fact that Trevor meets Dot. She plays a big role to the whole story, as well to Trevor’s life – she gives him hope. And the feeling of happiness and love. As for Selena Gomez.. once again she proves than her actress skills are in her and are getting better every time.
Although the story is grabbing you by every emotion, at some moments it gets very sad… but it all ends with us laughing. Now, I don’t know if you can even call it a “review” (what I just wrote), but I completely recommend this movie. This is such an emotional, interesting and just amazing journey and story, AND – you can get a lot of laughs during it.. and I mean A LOT. It has truly everything.
My Rating: 10/10
I hope I have intrigued you into watch this movie, or maybe you have already seen it, both ways – write in the comments your thoughts about the movie!
